Rai license fee exemption 2024: Requirements and deadlines



The RAI license fee, commonly known as the TV license fee , is a mandatory tax of 70 euros per year for anyone who owns a television set in Italy. It is paid once a year per family, provided that all family members reside in the same home.

Residents abroad who own a TV in Italy are also required to pay.


What is the RAI license fee exemption?


The exemption of the 2024 RAI license fee is a benefit that allows specific categories of citizens to avoid paying the television tax. Among the beneficiaries of the exemption are:


  1. Citizens without TV: Those who do not own a television and who own a residential electricity user. In this case, it is necessary to declare the absence of television sets using a specific form from the Revenue Agency.

  2. Seniors over 75: Elderly people over the age of 75 with an annual income, together with that of their spouse, of less than 8,000 euros, can request exemption. It is important that there are no cohabitants with their own income, with the exception of domestic workers, housekeepers and carers.

  3. Foreign diplomats and soldiers: These groups are also exempt from paying the TV license fee.


How to request exemption?


Each category has specific requirements and different deadlines for requesting exemption.


  • Citizens without TV: They must demonstrate the absence of television sets in all homes where an electricity user is active in their name or in the name of a family member. The request for exemption must be made by filling out a specific form available at the Revenue Agency.


  • Seniors over 75: To obtain the exemption, it is necessary to present a substitute declaration and, if the fee has already been charged in the electricity bill, a request for reimbursement using the forms provided by the Revenue Agency. If the elderly person turns 75 by January 31, 2024, the benefit applies for the entire year. If the birthday occurs between 1 February and 31 July 2024, the exemption is valid for the second semester and the application must be submitted by 31 July 2024.

Dal 2016, il canone RAI viene addebitato direttamente sulla bolletta dell'energia elettrica. L'importo annuale di 70 euro è suddiviso in 10 rate mensili, pagate tra gennaio e ottobre. Per disdire il canone, è necessario presentare la dichiarazione di esonero entro i termini stabiliti dall'Agenzia delle Entrate, utilizzando i moduli disponibili online.
